Our Emirates FA Cup journey came to a disappointing end on Saturday afternoon as Retford FC secured a 2–0 victory at the Vertigo Stadium.

There was a real sense of anticipation around the ground as Town welcomed Retford for their opening FA Cup tie, with a healthy crowd of 194 supporters in attendance. The occasion also marked an important moment for the visitors, who were playing their first-ever Emirates FA Cup fixture.

Skegness were hoping to make this an encouraging start to the cup campaigns, but Retford proved difficult opponents and took their chances when they came. Town were unable to find a way through the visitors’ defence, and Retford ultimately emerged with a two-goal victory.

For the Lilywhites, it was a particularly frustrating afternoon. The FA Cup offers clubs at this level the opportunity to create a memorable cup run, as well as the prospect of valuable prize money and another big occasion, and there was genuine disappointment at seeing the campaign end at the first hurdle.

Retford’s 2–0 victory sends them through to the Preliminary Round, while Skegness must now turn their attention back to The FA Vase on Saturday, as we look to respond positively from the disappointment. Eastwood CFC will be our visitors.

A good-sized crowd, a special cup occasion and plenty of expectation ultimately ended in frustration for Town, but the season is still in its early stages and there will be plenty more opportunities for the Lilywhites to make their mark.
