It’s back to cup action for the Lilywhites this Saturday as we make the trip to Muglet Lane to face Maltby Main FC in the Preliminary Round of the Sports Ground Development UCL Cup.

With our FA Cup and FA Vase campaigns already coming to an end, this competition takes on added importance. Alongside the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy, the UCL Cup is now one of just two remaining cup competitions available to us this season, and we will be looking to take the next step towards a potential cup run.

Recent Form

We head into Saturday’s tie looking to bounce back from last weekend’s narrow home defeat to Kimberley Miners Welfare.

Our recent league results have been a mixture of encouraging performances and frustrating setbacks. We suffered a 3-2 defeat away at Hucknall Town before responding with a 2-1 home victory against Deeping Rangers.

A 2-2 draw with Hinckley AFC followed, before we produced one of our better away performances of the campaign to record a 3-1 victory at AFC Mansfield.

Last Saturday, however, Kimberley Miners Welfare came away from the MKM Stadium with a 1-0 victory.

There have been positives to take from our performances, but consistency will be something we will be looking to build as the season progresses.

Our national cup campaigns have unfortunately already come to an end.

In The FA Cup, we were beaten 2-0 at home by Retford, while our FA Vase campaign ended in particularly frustrating circumstances against Eastwood.

After Matt Clarke had given us the lead from the penalty spot, Eastwood levelled through an own goal to take the tie to penalties. Despite battling throughout, we ultimately suffered a 4-3 defeat in the shoot-out.

Those exits are now behind us, though, and our focus turns firmly towards the competitions that remain.

Maltby Main

Our opponents on Saturday are Maltby Main, who this season are competing in United Counties League Division One.

Maltby have made the move across to the UCL following their time in the Northern Counties East League, and they have made a mixed but increasingly positive start to life in Step 6 Division One.

Their opening six league matches have produced three wins and three defeats, with 12 goals scored.

They began the campaign impressively with a 4-0 away victory against Clifton All Whites, before defeats against Clipstone Welfare, Harrowby United and Shirebrook Town.

More recently, however, Maltby have hit some good form.

They recorded a 3-0 away victory at Dronfield Town before following that up with an impressive 4-0 home win against Pinchbeck United.

That means our opponents come into Saturday's cup tie having won their last two matches without conceding a goal. We know, therefore, that we will have to be at our best if we are to progress, even though they are from the step below us.

A club with plenty of history

Maltby Main have a long association with the local community and can trace their origins back to 1916, when they were formed as the local colliery club.

The club went through a number of changes over the decades before becoming Maltby Miners Welfare in 1970 and later reverting to the Maltby Main name.

There is also a connection between the two clubs through our respective time in the Northern Counties East League. However, competitive meetings between the Lilywhites and Maltby Main have been limited in recent years, with the two clubs generally competing in different divisions. Saturday's meeting therefore provides another chapter in the history between the two sides.

Another Cup Opportunity

With the FA Cup and FA Vase campaigns now behind us, Saturday represents an important opportunity for us to progress in another competition.

We still have the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy to compete for, but our attention this weekend is firmly on the UCL Cup.

Cup football can provide its own challenges, particularly away from home, and Maltby will go into the game full of confidence after their back-to-back league victories.

For us, though, the objective is clear: progress to the next round.

We know we have the ability within our squad to put together a cup run, and everyone connected with the club will be hoping Saturday can be the start of something special.

The first challenge comes at Muglet Lane.
