Skegness Town manager Gary King made the trip to Derbyshire hoping his side could finally kick-start their league campaign with a much-needed victory, but the Lilywhites had to settle for a point after a dramatic afternoon at Clay Cross Town.
Skegness arrived at the NYR Ground having gone seven league games without a win, with their last league success dating back to 2nd September, when they recorded a victory over Blackstones.
There have, however, been positives to take from the period, with progress in both league and county cup competitions offering encouragement that the side are capable of producing the performances needed to turn their league fortunes around.
Last week's impressive display away at St Neots in the UCL Cup had provided further evidence of that potential, and King would have been hoping his players could transfer that form into the bread and butter of the league campaign and return to winning ways.
There was also a welcome sight, as popular defender Bailey Dilley returned to the Skegness Town fold following a spell working in the USA.
Having now returned to the UK, Bailey has signed for the club once again and was named among the substitutes for the trip to Clay Cross. He was introduced late in the second half, marking his return to action in a Skegness shirt and providing a welcome boost to Gary King's defensive options for the remainder of the campaign.
Early Setback for the Lilywhites
The hosts made the perfect start, taking the lead inside the opening five minutes. The much travelled Greg Smith found the net in the 5th minute to put Clay Cross Town ahead and leave Skegness with an early challenge to overcome.
Skegness had to regroup following the setback and work their way back into the contest, knowing that a positive result on the road would be valuable as they looked to build some momentum in their league campaign.
Floodlight Failure Threatens to End the Contest
The biggest talking point of the afternoon came during the second half, when the match was brought to a halt after the generator supplying power to the ground's floodlights failed to start.
With daylight fading, there were genuine concerns that the fixture could be abandoned, with both sets of players and supporters left waiting to discover whether the game could continue.
After an interruption of approximately ten minutes, the generator eventually managed to stay running, providing just enough power to illuminate four of the ground's six floodlight towers. With sufficient lighting deemed available, the referee allowed the contest to resume.
It was an unusual and somewhat frustrating interruption, but both sides returned to the field knowing there was still a result to be decided.
Dakin Delivers Late Drama
Despite the disruption, both sides continued to search for a decisive goal as the closing stages approached.
And just when it looked as though Clay Cross would hold on for all three points, Skegness finally found their breakthrough.
Lucas Dakin popped up in the 90th minute, recorded as 90+2, to send the travelling Lilywhites into celebrations and bring the scores level at 1–1.
With the momentum now seemingly with Skegness, both teams pushed forward in search of a winner during the closing moments.
However, the final stages brought further controversy. Despite the approximately ten-minute delay caused by the floodlight failure, the referee indicated just seven minutes of additional time.
Even more puzzling for those watching, the final whistle was blown after only four minutes of the indicated additional time had been played, with both sides still actively searching for a winning goal.
It was an understandably frustrating conclusion to an already unusual afternoon, particularly given the significant interruption earlier in the half and the opportunity for either side to snatch a late winner.
Points Shared, But the Search Continues
Ultimately, the points were shared, with Dakin's late intervention ensuring Skegness returned home with something to show for their efforts.
While the point extends the Lilywhites' search for a league victory to eight games, there will at least be encouragement in the determination shown to fight back and take something from a difficult away fixture.
Gary King will now be hoping his side can build on the positives from their recent cup performances, carry that form into the league and finally get back to winning ways on Saturday, when the visitors will be Heanor Town.
There was also the added bonus of welcoming Bailey Dilley back into the fold, with his return providing another option as the Lilywhites look ahead to the challenges to come.
