We return to home action this Saturday looking to turn a welcome late equaliser at Clay Cross Town into a much-needed return to winning ways, as Heanor Town make the trip to the coast.
The Lilywhites showed plenty of character last weekend to rescue a point in dramatic fashion, with Lucas Dakin striking in the 92nd minute to secure a 1-1 draw at Clay Cross. Having fallen behind inside the opening five minutes, we had to show resilience to get back into the contest and, despite creating plenty of opportunities, it looked as though we would leave empty-handed until Dakin popped up in stoppage time.
While the late goal provided a welcome boost, there is no escaping the fact that league victories have been hard to come by. Town have now gone seven league games without a win, dating back to our last success at Blackstones on 2nd September, and the need to start turning performances into wins is becoming increasingly important.
There have, however, been encouraging signs away from league action. The recent cup performances have demonstrated the quality and potential within the squad, with an impressive 4-1 victory at West Bridgford Colts followed by an excellent 3-2 win away at St Neots Town in the UCL Cup. Those results have shown what this group is capable of, and manager Gary King will be keen to see that confidence and attacking threat translated into consistent league form.
Saturday's visitors, Heanor Town, will provide another stern test. Heanor arrive having enjoyed a positive start to their league campaign and sit just above Skegness in the Premier Division North table, with games in hand. They have also shown their ability to pick up results on the road and will be looking to continue their push up the table.
The two sides are certainly familiar with one another, having shared an entertaining 2-2 draw in the corresponding fixture at the end of January earlier this year. Previous meetings have also produced their fair share of goals, so there is every reason to expect a competitive encounter.
For Skegness, the challenge is clear. The performances and glimpses of quality are there, but now is the time to start delivering the results that will help improve our league position. The late equaliser at Clay Cross could provide a platform to build on, but the priority will be to take the game to Heanor, make home advantage count and show the determination required to secure all three points.
With two successive home fixtures ahead, this is an important opportunity for the Lilywhites to give our league campaign fresh impetus.
The players and management will be hoping for a strong home backing as they look to get the season moving in the right direction.
Come on you Lilywhites!
